Spay & Neuter

Spaying and neutering your pet is part of being a responsible pet owner. These procedures help control the pet population and prevent you from having unwanted puppies or kittens. At All Care Animal Clinic in West Palm Beach, FL, we offer spay and neuter surgery.

Why Spay and Neuter?

There are several reasons to spay or neuter your pet. Unwanted pregnancies can be problematic for you, your neighborhood, and the animals themselves. Unfortunately, there are often more pets than loving homes. Unwanted pets end up on the streets or in shelters. Spaying and neutering your pets helps prevent this problem. The procedure can also reduce the risk of diseases and curb unwanted behaviors.

Spay and Neuter Surgery

Females are spayed, which means their ovaries and uterus are removed. Spaying prevents a pet from becoming pregnant. Male pets are neutered. This means their testicles are removed. Without their testicles, they can't produce sperm. It is an outpatient procedure. This means you will bring your pet in for the procedure and bring them home the same day.

Age a Pet Can Be Spayed or Neutered

Pets can be spayed or neutered at a young age. However, some owners choose to wait until their pet is no longer a puppy or kitten. Spaying or neutering too early can affect their physical and emotional development by depriving them of the hormones needed for development. However, once they reach sexual maturity, you'll need to supervise them closely, particularly when a female is in heat, to avoid unwanted pregnancy.

Behavioral Effects

Spaying or neutering your pet greatly reduces its sex hormones, which can reduce some unwanted behaviors. Females will not experience heat cycles, which can cause mood swings, anxiety, and more. Males who are neutered will typically not experience sexual desire. They won't be aggressive because they are competing with another male for a female, and they won't try to mount other dogs. The procedure can reduce or eliminate urine marking in both genders. However, the age when they are sterilized matters. If they have reached sexual maturity, they may retain some of these behaviors after the surgery.
