When Pets Have Orthopedic Problems

Your pets may sometimes develop orthopedic issues, which involve their bones and joints. An orthopedic condition can cause pain, limpness, or lameness in your pet. If you see your pet limping or notice it has pain in one or more of its legs, you should seek veterinary care for them. Once our doctor has found the source of the problem, they may prescribe medication or physical therapy to alleviate the issue.

When you bring your pet to our veterinary clinic, our veterinarian, Dr. Oberto, will examine your pet. She will ask questions to determine how your pet’s condition affects them. Your pet can then receive x-rays and blood tests to determine the cause of their condition. Once a diagnosis is made, the doctor can develop your pet’s treatment plan.

Common Orthopedic Conditions in Pets

Some common orthopedic pet problems include hip dysplasia (displacement of the hip joint), patellar luxation (kneecap displacement), torn ligaments, or arthritis. Hip dysplasia is a genetic condition that can be made worse by the animal’s diet. According to VCA Hospitals, dogs who overeat, or large breed dogs, are more likely to develop hip dysplasia. Dogs with hip dysplasia may receive relief with anti-inflammatory drugs or pain medication.

A luxated patella most often occurs in smaller breeds of dogs. The kneecap will pop out of the knee joint and cause a “skipping” movement when walking. The most common treatment for this condition is pain medication, although the doctor may also recommend exercise restriction, weight control, or physical therapy. In extreme cases, your pet may need to undergo surgery to correct the dislocation.
