How to Prepare for Your First Road Trip with Your Pet

If you are planning to take a road trip with you and your pet, it is important to be completely prepared before you leave. Long-distance trips can be difficult with a pet, and without the necessary preparation, it can turn into a nightmare. Here are a few tips to help traveling with your animal.

Tip 1: Get Your Pet Used to the Car

Pet road trips won't be easy if your pet doesn't go in the car very often. A couple of weeks before the trip, you can prepare your animal by taking them for daily rides in the car. With each car ride, your pet will get more and more comfortable being in the car, making the trip easier on you both.

Tip 2: Keep Your Pets Restrained

When on the road, it is important that you keep your pet restrained. It is not safe for your pet to be running around the car while driving. Also, if you get in a car accident, your pet can be seriously injured if not properly restrained. If you have a small dog or cat, their crate is all you need. If your pet is too large or doesn't like the crate, you can buy seat belt attachments designed for dogs. You can also buy a dog car seat similar to one for an infant.

Tip 3: Pack a Travel Kit

There are several things that your pet will need to keep them happy and comfortable when you are on the road. When packing your pet travel kit, you should include:

  • Food and water
  • Travel dishes
  • Your pet's favorite blanket
  • Your pet's favorite toy
  • Medication
  • Leash and collar
  • Waste bags for cleaning poop along the way
  • Puppy pads to protect the seats in case of an accident
  • Treats to reward your pet for doing well

Tip 4: Tags and Shots

Before heading out on the road, you should make sure that the contact information on your dog's tags is correct. If your pet has a microchip, make sure that the contact information is correct. You should also make sure that your dog's rabies vaccine is up-to-date, and bring a copy of the rabies vaccine certificate with you.
